UPI Rule Change: Inactive Mobile Numbers Will Lose UPI Access
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has put UPI transactions under stricter security mechanisms. As per the new regulation, if your registered mobile phone number remains inactive for a period of more than 90 days, your UPI services shall automatically be discontinued.
Why is this important?
- Telecom companies can reassign inactive numbers to new users after 90 days.
- If your old mobile number that was used for UPI becomes inactive, then your UPI ID becomes inoperative.

Avoid Inactivity
- Make sure you use your registered mobile number often so that it doesn’t become inactive.
- Keep the UPI primary number active, even if you have a second number.
Be Careful with the Changes in the Collect Payment Feature
- NPCI is limiting access to Collect Payment to reduce the risk of fraud.
- Only verified sellers will have access, with a transaction cap of ₹2,000 for individuals.
