PM Ujjwala Yojana Update: The Government of India has instituted various welfare schemes to help families at the bottom of the pyramid, with the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana being one of the biggest interventions.
Launched in 2016, this scheme aims to provide free LPG gas connections to women from economically weaker sections, conferring upon them the right to clean and safe cooking fuel.
Over 12 crores of households have benefited from this program so far, with a resultant decrease in dependence on traditional and hazardous cooking methods. With the success of Phase 1, the government has now rolled out Ujjwala 2.0 to extend its reach.
Can Two Women from the Same Household Obtain a Free Cylinder?
One of the common questions among beneficiaries is whether two women from the same family can avail themselves of this scheme. According to the official guidelines:
- One connection shall be given per family under the Ujjwala Programme.
- If one woman from the family has a Ujjwala connection, the second woman of the same house cannot claim another.
But in a case where two women from one family are living separately, i.e., with separate ration cards, family IDs, and residential proof, both can apply and enjoy the benefit.
Gas agencies and oil companies use the Aadhaar card, bank account, and family identity proof to verify these claims before approval.
