Established in 1954 by the late Dr. Theodore von Kármán, a pioneer in aeronautics and the first director of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, the Josephine de Kármán Fellowship Trust is named in memory of his sister, Josephine, who passed away in 1951.
This prestigious fellowship is intended to support outstanding doctoral candidates who exemplify the same intellectual excellence and dedication to scholarship that Professor von Kármán espoused.
Who Can Apply?
- Eligible Degree: PhD students in their last year of studies only.
- Eligible Universities: Open to students enrolled in recognized universities in California, USA.
- Eligible Fields: All areas of study, but emphasis will be given to applicants from the Humanities.
Please note that undergraduate, master’s, and postdoctoral students are excluded from applying for this fellowship.
Scholarship Benefits
- Award Amount: $28,000 as a one-time award.
- Number of Awards: Four fellowships will be granted for the 2025-2026 academic year.
- Coverage: The scholarship may cover tuition and fees but will not pay for living expenses, food, travel, health insurance, or any other individual costs.
Key Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must currently be registered in a PhD program in California.
- Final-year PhD students will be given precedence.
- Humanities will receive priority.
