From the point of view of ATMs, they have transformed our access to money in the sense that we can withdraw it anywhere without hassle. But, at times, these ATMs mess up due to technical problems or issues with cards, causing inconvenience to the customers. Have you ever found yourself in a position where your account has been debited, but cash has not been dispensed? Don’t fret, you’re not alone! The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has put stringent rules that offer some protection to consumers under such circumstances. Here is all that you need to know.
What Happens When an ATM Fails to Dispense Cash?
Let’s say you swiped your card and entered your PIN-makings a request for cash-and your ATM flashed a confirmation message. But there isn’t any money coming from the ATM. Panic strikes, wondering where it went after all your hard-earned money.
It is true for you: The money is supposed to be returned within 5 working days according to RBI norms. If the bank doesn’t comply, it will pay a penalty of ₹100 per day until the amount gets credited back to your account.
What Should You Do If an ATM Transaction Fails?
- Check Your Bank Notification – Immediately verify if you received an SMS or email confirming the debit.
- Review Your Account Balance – Log in to your net banking or mobile banking app to confirm the deduction.
- Wait for 5 Days – In most cases, banks automatically reverse the amount within this period.
- File a Complaint with Your Bank – If the money isn’t refunded, visit your bank branch and report the issue.
- Escalate to RBI’s Grievance Cell – If the bank doesn’t resolve the issue within 30 days, you can approach the RBI’s Banking Ombudsman.
