Retirement Age Update 2025: No Change for Central Government Employees, Confirms Centre

The government has now proposed that there be no increases in old-age pension grants to its employees until April, 2025. Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, informed, in a written answer to the Lok Sabha on March 19, 2025, that “No proposal to change the retirement age of government employees is under consideration of the government”.

Retirement Age of Central Government Employees

At present, the retirement age for almost all employees of the central government is 60 years. This is being defined under Fundamental Rule (F.R.) 56(a) to mean, a government servant shall retire on the last day of the month in which he attains the age of sixty years.

Clarification Regarding Retirement Age

In answer to the question raised in parliament, the Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, said there were no formal proposals for changes in the retirement age submitted. Further, he stated that retirement-age data of central government employees and state government employees are not maintained centrally since it is in the jurisdiction of individual states.

Unfairness at State Level

While at the central government level the age of retirement is more or less 60 years or just above it, states can set their own ages for retirement according to their policies; hence the contrast that exists between the states today. For example, whereas the Haryana government has just increased the retirement age for its employees from 58 to 60 years, it has also raised the retirement age of Group D employees from 60 to 62 years, from March 13, 2025.

Conclusion

Till now, the central government employees shall continue to retire at 60 years of age with no changes whatsoever in the offing. Employees are advised to stay connected with.
