With disbursement of the 19th installment underway, millions of farmers in India sit with bated breath about the 20th installment of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. Alert has to go out to beneficiary farmers, who must complete registration by the 30th of April, for delay in the registration process thereafter may see payments postponed or withheld.
Why is it Compulsory to have a Farmer ID Card?
The PM Kisan Yojana, launched in 2019, is one of the most effective farmer welfare schemes by the Indian government. Under this scheme, the eligible farmers get ₹6,000 on an annual basis, divided into three equal installments of ₹2,000 each. The money is transferred to the bank account of the beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism.
To reduce the hassle and be transparent, the government is issuing the Kisan Pehchan Patra (Farmers ID card) as a digital identity card for all the farmers, just like Aadhaar. In this mission, the objectives to curb fraud and to make the benefits exclusive to only real farmers are achieved.
What Must Farmers Do Before April 30?
The Agriculture Department has sent SMSs to all registered farmers to register for Kisan ID before April 30. Here is how farmers can obtain their Kisan ID card:
- Visit a Camp/Jan Seva Kendra in the Area – Government officials from Agriculture or Revenue Departments will hold camps in villages.
- Submit the Required Documents – Carry ID and landownership documents to prove identity.
- “Go through Biometric Authentication” – Similar to the process for Aadhaar enrollment, the farmers may provide fingerprint or iris scan.
What if Farmers Do Not Register by the Deadline?
Those farmers who were not able to register for Farmer ID before April 30 will stand a chance to miss the 20th installment. This regulation is being enforced strictly to wipe out duplicate beneficiaries and ensure that funds reach only genuine beneficiaries.
